Although George Plowman first appears in Philadelphia city directories as an architect in 1889, when his office is listed as 1017 Chestnut Street, a George Plowman had appeared as early as 1877 in the city directories as the owner of a sawmill and as a contractor. Beginning in 1887 this George Plowman, planing mill, had also maintained an office at 1017 Chestnut Street, leadingto the assumption that the two are the same person. Plowman then continues in the city directories as an architect through 1903. One testament to Plowman's influence as an architect is the fact that in 1893 he was considered a candidate to succeed John Ord as Architect for the City of Philadelphia, a post which he lost to James H. Windrim.

For most of the architectural listing in both the city directories and the Philadelphia Real Estate Record and Builders Guide, Plowman is listed with George Plowman & Co..
