Son of John and Maria M. (Nightingale) Duckworth, John A. Duckworth was born in Toronto, Canada, where his sculptor father was pursuing a second career in contracting. He took a special course at the Mechanics' Institute in Toronto and then entered the architectural firm of William Trouig, the Scot-born architect who, while Duckworth was part of the office, designed the Parliament Buildings in Toronto. After five years with Trouig, Duckworth moved to New York City and joined the office of D. and J. Jardine. After a stint of employment with this office he often moved, relocating to San Francisco, Chicago and Buffalo, before returning to New York City for another year. In 1882 he located in Wilkes Barre, PA, with the partnership of Neier & Duckworth, but this apparently was a short-termed arrangement because one year later he moved to Scranton. There he flourished.
