There are few details about the training of Calvin Thomas Stowe Brent; however, District of Columbia building permits indicate that he completed work throughout the city. According to family tradition, he apprenticed with Plowman and Weightman>, a firm of architects in the District, and it has been speculated that this is the Philadelphia Thomas M. Plowman who did work in the Districk in the 1860s.
From the surviving building permits it appears that Brent served as both architect and builder for several churches and even more residences in the District of Columbia.
