According to Albert W. Leh's biographer Kenneth F. Raniere, John Stewart Allam came to the Lehigh Valley when he was 16 years old, apprenticed with John and Abraham Yost, and established his own contracting business in 1877. His collaboration with Leh formed the face of South Bethlehem, PA, in the late nineteenth century, and his work was carried on by Benedict Birkel, who also worked with Leh after Allam's death.
