He attended the Philadelphia public schools from 1887 to 1895 and Drexel Institute evening classes from 1899 to 1901. Beginning his career as a carpenter's apprentice, McQuade then became a building superintendent and estimator, and building contractor. By 1914 he was a partner in Ketcham & McQuade and in 1935 established his own company, which evolved into John S. McQuade, Jr. in 1947 and then the John S. McQuade Co. in 1959.
