Born in Lansdowne, PA, to Howard and Helen Trump (Comly) White, Barclay White attended Friends Central School and then Swarthmore College, graduating with his A.B. in 1906 and his Masters in Civil Engineering in 1909. By 1906 he was employed as an engineer in building construction for the Truscon Steel Company, and by 1908 as an engineer with Philadelphia Steel and Wire Company, where he remained only through 1909. 1910 found him working for the John R. Wiggins Company as an engineer and building superintendent, and he remained with Wiggins through 1912. By 1913 he had become president of the Barclay White Company, builders in Philadelphia.
He was a member of the Board of Managers for Swarthmore College as well as a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
