Born: 4/2/1873

Born in Philadelphia to Ambrose E. and Imogene B. (Potts) Witmer, Francis Potts Witmer graduated from Central High School in 1891 and then gained his B.S. at the University of Pennsylvania in 1893, followed by his degree in Civil Engineering in 1894. He was employed as a draftsman and designer for the Phoenix Bridge Company from 1897 to 1900 and then became engineer in charge of bridge design for the American Bridge Company, first in the Philadelphia office and then in New York City, from 1901 to 1913. In 1913 he became a structural engineer with the New York Railway Corporation (Brooklyn Rapid Transit System) until 1920, when he changed employment to the office of Howard C. Baird. In 1924 he returned to Philadelphia as director of the civil engineering department and professor of civil engineering.
