Born in Boston, Henry D. Chandler graduated from Harvard University in 1906, attended MIT from 1906 to 1909 and then went to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, remaining in France for three years. He was associated with a number of Boston architects, including Bigelow & Wadsworth while he was studying at MIT. When he returned from Paris, he joined the office of Peabody & Stearns, but in 1913 he joined Allen & Collins, where he remained until 1930. In 1930 he launched his own practice.
