Samuel H. French, Jr. was born in Bryn Mawr, PA, the son of Samuel H. French (Sr.), and graduated from Episcopal Academy and from Dartmouth College (where he earned a B. A.) before earning an M. Arch. at the University of Pennsylvania in 1965. After a stint as a lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps of the Army, French worked for three months with Gordon Galusha in Petersburg, VA (May - June 1963).
French joined the office of Vincent G. Kling & Associates as a staff architect in 1964. However, he interrupted his time with Kling by working as designer and job captain for the Junta Nacional de la Vivienda in Lima, Peru, from 1965 to 1967. He returned to Kling in 1967 as a job captain and was later made an associate. In 1970, he and Robert T. Crane III formed French & Crane, architects and planners.
French joined the AIA in 1969.
