Richard C. Koelle was born in Philadelphia, the son of Jane Salmon and architect-engineer William F. Koelle, and attended Episcopal Academy in Merion, PA before earning a B. Arch. at the University of Pennsylvania in 1938. Richard Koelle joined his father's firm, William F. Koelle & Co., after graduation, which specialized in the construction of breweries. Richard Koelle ran the business between 1948 and 1975, when he sold it to engineers Day & Zimmerman. He continued to work for that firm until his retirement in 1980.
