Nicola DAscenzo (1871-1954) was an Italian-born artist who established the most successful stained glass studio in Philadelphia. Working in the medieval guild tradition, but unafraid to incorporate modern content into his designs, DAscenzo developed a nation-wide clientele and designed windows and murals for ecclesiastical, academic, residential and commercial structures. The diversity of his designs are represented in commissions such as the Valley Forge Memorial Chapel, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC and scores of Horn & Hardart automats. The Athenaeum acquired The DAscenzo Studio archive over a period of years between 1979 and 1987, including 40 cubic feet of business records, thousands of photographs thousands of full-size cartoons and approximately 1300 watercolor renderings of window and mural designs.

The collection is composed of four components: 1)Job Files (JF) arranged by commission number, which contain both correspondence and invoice data; 2)Renderings, which are watercolor sketches of window designs, 3) Cartoons which are full-scale charcoal and pastel window design drawings on cartridge paper and 4)Photographs, which include 8 x 10 black and white prints (P), glass lantern slides (LS) and Subject Specific Albums (AL). The photographs can be searched in the holdings by name or number. Scanning, inventory and rehousing of the photographic collection was underwritten by a generous grant in 2009 by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission.
