MARC Description:
Title from drawing BOS488*002. Drawing nos. 488-1 through 488-3 have the signature and seal of A.T. Smith. Drawing nos. BOS488*005-008 have seal stamp for "J. Edward Hutchison, Registered Profession Engineer ..." and have stamp for "Moody & Hutchison, Consulting Engineers, Philadelphia, Pa." Drawing nos. BOS488*010-012 have seal stamps for Chester I. Duncan and Chester I. Duncan, Jr. Drawing nos. BOS488*010 & *012 have "Chester I. Duncan & Son" pencilled in margin. Project no. 488. Two drawings carry the number "488-1" (BOS488*001-002), but are visually unique and have the creation dates of 1-17-55 and 7-13-55, respectively. The Biographical dictionary of Philadelphia architects, p.85, indicates that the firm name changed from Zantzinger and Borie to Borie and Smith in 1951. Drawings no. 488-4 through 488-7, previously cataloged as Laverty v.1, p.259, ZAB488/012, are included here as part of the Borie and Smith set of drawings for the Gymnasium. Apparently, old preprinted drawing sheets still carrying the "Zantzinger and Borie" name, were used. However, the project numbers and dates appear to indicate that these drawings were from the Borie and Smith firm period. ZAB488*005-012 date from the period of Febrary 1940, evidentally an earlier proposal from the Zantzinger and Borie firm for the same structure.
