Client Name: Baird, Mrs.
MARC Description:
Accompanied the drawings are: [A] 4 b/w photographs mounted on board. "Hastings Square, Spring Lake, N.J. Photo by Hill, Asbury Park N.J." [1] North-west corner [2] North-east corner [3] South-west corner [4] South-east corner. [B] A promotional flyer. Front: "Mrs. Anna W. Baird, Spring Lake Improvements. Season 1882. Wm. H. Hoskins, Printer, 912 Arch Street, Philadelphia. Back: Benjamin Linfoot, architect. No. 719 Walnut Street, Philadelphia ... February 13th, 1882." This flyer includes reproductions of drawing items *001 & *003 and also a block plan showing 18 addresses between Sussex & Essex Avenues and First & Ocean Avenues. [3] Notes from Benjamin S. Linfoot, dated Sept. 1, 1981, pertaining to a trip he took to Spring Lake. This set contains items, identified from written or visual information, particularly related to the Hastings Square development of Spring Lake, N.J. Included are items *003, *005A, and *011 which are specifically identified as property of Mrs. A.W. Baird. *003 is a bird's eye view, showing the block with an orientation to a body of water with ships on the horizon. A formal title block using a fish theme reads "The Mrs. A.W. Baird's Block, Spring Lake, New Jersey. B. Linfoot, 719 Walnut St., Phila., Architect & Agent." *005A, a perspective for a "Pair of twin cottages situated on Hasting's Square, Spring Lake, N.J. ..." includes a plan of the ground floor, which shows an orientation to First Ave. & Essex Ave. *011 is a watercolor rendering of a residence, possibly with the lake(?) in the background. Another similar watercolor rendering, item *002, is identified as "Essex Avenue" and may also be Mrs. Baird's property. Also, *001 is an unidentified streetscape, which appears to show Mrs. Bair's house from *005 at the center of the drawing, on the corner of Essex and First Aves. This image is reproduced in the promotional flyer as "Perspective view from the south-west". Two items, *013 & *014 are identified as "Surf cottages (Mrs. Urie's) ..." or "Pair of semi-detached cottages ... property of Mrs. S.E. Urie." A fish sketch, similar to the title area of *003 is included on *013 without the title data. Item *010A is identified as "Miss Townson's Essex House ..." While the drawing notes "Erected A.D. 1881", it is signed "B. Linfoot, del. 1882", suggesting that this and possibly other drawings were created after the construction, not necessarily as part of the design & construction process. Item nos. *004A, *006A, *007A, and *008 are all different renderings, each with the title "Pair of semi-detached cottages, 'Hastings Square', Spring Lake, N.J." Two small drawings of a different character, items *009A and *012A, show the "Tank, engine & gas house" or "water, gas & sewage works". These appear to be plan & perspective rendering for the same structure. No creator identification is given. The drawings have "No. 1" or "No. 2" in the top right corner. Also included, but not specifically identified as "Hastings Square" is Linfoot's drawing for the Presbyterian Church in Spring Lake. Throughout his work Benjamin Linfoot often uses two designations, one for himself as architect and also as delineator, frequently using two separately signatures on a sheet. In addition to the drawings for Hastings Square, many of these sheets have drawings on the verso for other unrelated projects. These items are designated with the letter "B" attached to the item number. These items include: *004B & *007B which appear to be the lower & upper portions of a drawing for an unidentified house, including five images, a perspective rendering, foundation & first floor plans, and a front & side elevation. *005B shows the right half of a sheet containing available labelling "...Cottages. Benjamin Linfoot, architect, 203 Wyoming Street, Philadelphia, Nov. 4, 1880." This is an earlier date, and a different address for Linfoot from the Hastings Square drawings. *006B is an unidentified house including first & second floor plans and front & side elevations. *010 is the first floor plan of an unidentified church at 25th St. & Brown St. Laverty suggests that may be Emanuel Methodist Church, Philadelphia. *012B has "Addition to farm house, nr. Westover, Md., property of Wm. S. Lane Esq., Philadelphia." but has no creator identification. Visually, this appears to be the second half of drawings matched by *009B which includes the back elevation, a chamber plan & plan of third story stairs. *006B above is similar, but not the same as *009B & *012B.
