MARC Description:
No Walter manuscript data in support of this project has been found. It is likely that the house was planned for Washington, D.C., or a Washington, D.C. resident client. A John Sherman, 1823-1900 is found in the Dictionary of American biography (1935), v.17, p.84-85, who in 1865 was a Senator from Ohio. Captioned photos from the Washington Post, Dec. 6, 1927, identify an old & new house for a John Sherman at 1319 K St., N.W. in Washington, D.C. The later, larger stone house is similar in type to those city mansions being constructed on Franklin Square and K St. during the 1870's and 1880's, as shown in Goode (1979) Capitol losses. The Sherman house in the photo is more Richardson Romanesque in style that the 1865 Walter Italian influenced mansion.
