MARC Description:
Perspective rendering. This item is attributed to Benjamin Linfoot, 1840-1912 by its style and presence in the collection. Visually, in terms of type of rendering & landscape depicted, along with the style of the buildings, it is most like the renderings for Hastings Square at Spring Lake, N.J., or the Eben C. Jayne Residence at Ocean Beach, N.J., cataloged separately. Four variants of the center house of the three depicted here are used as Plate 9 in Linfoot's book Architectural picture making with pen & ink, 1884. The bottom right plate includes the inscription "Benjamin Linfoot, delt., 719 Walnut Street, Philada., 1884", thus suggesting the attribution and approx. date. Laverty identifies the location as Ocean Beach, N.J., and gives a quote "View from corner". The source of the information is not known, as no identification is currently given on the piece. It may, perhaps have been on a mount, now absent. Comparison of this drawing with LIN*010*004, labelled "Residence, Ocean Beach, N.J. for Eben C. Jayne, Esqr. / B. Linfoot, del. [18]83", show that the center house in this rendering could be the house in the background in the Jayne rendering. However, the house to the left in this rendering, which should match the house in the foregroud in LIN*010*004, is not a good match.
