Prior to the Monroe Grammar School an unnamed school rented from a building at this location since 1819. The Monroe Grammar School rented from a new building in the same location and then disbanded in 1876, (Curtis, p. 303).
This building is within the fourteenth section: "The boundaries of the Fourteenth Ward of the City of Philadelphia, which comprises the Fourteenth Section of the First School District of Pennsylvania, are Tenth and Broad, Vine and Poplar Streets," (Curtis, p. 303).
