1955 EARLIEST DOCUMENTED DATE	Congress authorized the appointment of a Commission to be composed of 12 commissioners for the purpose of considering and formulating plans for the design, construction, and location of a permanent memorial to Franklin Delano Roosevelt in Washington.
1959 PLANNING STUDY	Congress reserves site in West Potomac Park; and authorizes the Commission to hold a competition.
1960 COMPETITION	unbuilt. 560 entries. Bacon, Edmund Norwood (1910-2005) (professional adviser for the competition) Competitor: Kahn, Louis Isadore (1901-1974) Competitor: Mitchell/Giurgola (fl. 1958 - 1990) (awarded honorable mention) Competitor: Venturi, Robert Charles (1925-2018) (awarded honorable mention; with Rauch, Patton and Gianopulos)
