Near Chelten Ave. is the elegant residence of Wm. L. Elkins bought of John H. Michener. The Philadelphia Inquirer, March 13, 1888 published this notice: The property formerly owned by J. Michener at Chelten Hills, which was purchased by W. L. Elkins has been entirely refitted. The house stands back from Chelten Ave. of Ashbourne Rd. on an elevation surrounded by an extensive lawn in a thick growh of trees, commanding a fine view of the surrounding country. The bldg. before alts. was in the style of architecture so much in vogue a half century ago, but with possibilities which have been amplified upon by the architect. The first radical change was a new roof, beautifully formed & broken w/gables & dormer windows, the designer evidently having Hawthorne in mind, as the gabled number 7. A new story was added to rear portion of house for accommodation of servants. The add. of a new porch gives the necessary shade to the lower rooms & a stone porte-cochere has been built on the main front, of rough quarry faced stone, of modern English design. The architect was Mr. Angus S. Wade. Charles McCaul contractor"
